George Wolff

Obituary of George Vincent Wolff

George V. Wolff ("Wolfie") of Holiday, FL, died peacefully Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at Suncoast Hospice in Palm Harbor, FL, at age 73. He was born November 10, 1948, in Ogdensburg, NY, to Bertha (née Legault) & William Wolff, and was a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy, class of 1966. A longtime resident of the North Country, George enjoyed hunting, spotting deer with his kids, boating on the St. Lawrence River, and hosting his loved ones at the fire station during the annual Seaway Festival parade. His family is grateful for the caregivers who kept him comfortable throughout his last days, and presented him with a veterans star and plaque. George loved his country and community. Two of the things he was most proud of were his service as a Signalman Third Class Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy (1967-1971 with honorable discharge) and 20-year career as a firefighter for the Ogdensburg Fire Department (1973-1993). During his tenure, he became a Certified Fire Investigator (IAAI-CFI) and PADI Rescue Diver. His love of the water paired with his affinity for Greek culture (developed while stationed four years in Greece) later influenced his decision to retire in Tarpon Springs, FL, the sponge capital of the world. George was preceded in death by his parents, William & Bertha Wolff, and his sisters, Sharon Wolff Brown and Mary L. (Richard) Reed. He will be deeply missed by his sister, Susan (Ronald) Mandigo of Ogdensburg; his children, Kelly (James) McCormick of Tarkington, TX, Jason Moquin of Ogdensburg, Cori Wolff (Matthew Grote) of Cincinnati, OH, and Jessy Wolff, also of Cincinnati; his grandchildren, James Ray & Ryan McCormick and Gage, Nicholas, Ivy, & Abigail Moquin; and his great-grandson Ezra McCormick. He is further survived by numerous beloved nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. The family is especially thankful for George's lifelong friends, Jim & Kate Amo and Tim Bell (deceased) of Ogdensburg, whose relationships he cherished. A celebration of life will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the Dobisky Visitors' Center, 100 Riverside Avenue, Ogdensburg, NY 13669. Private burial to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Ogdensburg Fire Department, 718 Ford Street, Ogdensburg, NY, 13669 or at http://www.ogdensburg.org/127/Fire.
